SHAWN
CUSHMAN
COACH
Shawn's soccer story began while he was serving our country in the US Army. While stationed in Germany, he was introduced to soccer and realized it was a sport that required endurance, coordination he had not developed, and teamwork. More importantly, it was very fun to play. After he returned to the US, his oldest son Rick loved the game and the only place that offered soccer was the YMCA. Shawn coached there for 3 years. Shawn wanted to teach players using the correct rules of the game and responded to an ad in the newspaper asking if anyone was interested in starting a soccer club. The 4 people that attended that meeting were Mike Andrews, Dick Dillon, Gene Stark, and himself. From that meeting Burlington Area Soccer Club was born in the mid 1980s. BASC offered soccer for youths 6 years old and up including travel teams. Concentrating on good technique, tactical instruction and fun. They also sponsored EURO TECH professional soccer coaches from around the world bringing international instruction to our community for over 25 years. Because of the success and growth of BASC, Parents began to push local school boards to adopt soccer as a high school sport. He helped start Norte Dame high school co ed team and was its first coach along with Rick Cooper in 1988. BHS was next to adopt soccer with an “experimental” program in 1990 and Shawn became the first boys coach in 1991. By 1993 the BHS boys team made their mark in the MAC conference by sharing the championship title with Bettendorf. In 1995 he spent time on a college campus earning his USSF C license. At the same time, he was volunteering as the soccer rep on the steering committee to build the RecPlex. He continued as the BHS head soccer coach for a total of 18 years. One of his highlights was being able to coach his final year with his son Trevor, who is the current head BHS Boys' coach.
During his coaching career, he was honored with coach of the year awards twice in the MAC conference and in 2009, he was inducted into the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

COACH'S CORNER
"Soccer has always been more than just a game to me—it was my passion, my escape, and the place where I felt most confident. After playing at a high level and dedicating years to the sport, I found myself missing that sense of purpose and fulfillment that soccer once gave me. While I didn’t pursue the professional path, the love for the game never left.
I created this club not only to give back to the sport that shaped me but also for my sons. I wanted to provide them with a place where they could develop, compete, and grow. I wanted to create a club culture that prioritizes development and character. My goals are to provide the best learning environment possible, developing players, not just in skill, but in mindset, discipline, and confidence—giving them a pathway to success, whether that’s in school, athletics, or life itself."
- Trevor Cushman

“I wanted to help provide an environment for kids interested in soccer to truly develop their skills and be encouraged to be better each time they play.”
- Cory O'Brien

"I coach youth soccer because I want to inspire kids to believe in themselves, develop teamwork, and learn valuable life skills through the game. Watching them grow both on and off the field is what motivates me everyday."
- Carlee Potts

"I am honored that they have asked me to be one of the assistant coaches for this new program. This club is determined to bring out the best in each player, teach a total understanding of the game, and build a love and appreciation for the sport of soccer. I am excited for the future of the Burlington Predators. The quality of the coaching staff, the hard work of the board members, and the dedication of the players and their families will ensure the success of this program."
- Shawn Cushman
"As a female athlete, I came from a time of very unstable and limited opportunities for females to play in college and lots of uncertainty in the few options in the United States to play semi-professionally or professionally. Choosing to stay in Burlington kept me close to family,, allowed me to stay connected to the Burlington Community School District and provided me with the opportunity to continue to share my love for soccer long after my own peak playing days were gone.
Being on this end of the spectrum in coaching is enlightening and rewarding. Being able to look back and see where the game started and how it has changed from the player, the coach, the parent and the female athlete perspective is very powerful. Soccer has come a long way in the past 45 years and the opportunities for girl’s players just continue to grow. I now have the enjoyment of having players that I’ve coached who have finished their soccer playing careers, started to raise their own families and are now coaching and/or cheering on their own children. It’s a blessing to be able to continue to be a part of this soccer circle."
